The BioPharma Degree Track in MOT [BioMOT]

Today's BioPharma industry represents a transformed competitive arena. Gone are the earlier days when companies would emerge from obscurity based solely on the hope that a discovery that would become a "blockbuster drug." Sustainable growth today depends increasingly on finding and managing effectively new and diverse ways to create value.
The biopharma managers and firms of today face many challenges. There are now established cures for most major diseases; competition has increased; and the R&D pipeline has slowed. Governmental policies are forcing greater efficiencies and cost cutting. Bioterrorism, a sluggish economy, the rise of biotechnology, generic pharmaceuticals, advancements in technology and an FDA organization under new management with aggressive directives are but some of the concerns that Big Pharma Goliaths and smaller biopharma companies must address. The potential for failure is enormous-the antidepressant market alone is valued at $8 billion and growing by 15% annually.

Advancements in Innovation via Technology
Advancements in DNA knowledge and genetic engineering technology gave birth to the biotechnology sector. There are today over 1500 biotech companies in the US, and another 1900 in the EU. The widespread use of computers and data management are profoundly affecting biopharma decision making and managerial practice. The FDA is encouraging a revolutionary electronic drug application process, resulting in the need for new software applications to meet the current requirements of new regulations for electronic records.

Changes in innovative technology and the regulatory environment now force the biopharma industry to better utilize its most valuable resource - people. In addition, sound scientific or technological breakthroughs no longer assure the success in the biopharma industry. Effective management of technology and innovation are essential and there is a need for developing new business models; for enhancing speed, execution, knowledge, sharing and productivity; and for meeting shareholder-value goals.
In order to prosper, biopharma managers must be agile in addressing risk management, lead project teams toward new biopharma innovations, concentrate a firm's efforts and resources on improving internal processes.
